About the Rossini Opera Festival

The Rossini Opera Festival (ROF) is an international music festival held in August of each year in Pesaro, Italy, the birthplace of the composer Gioachino Rossini. Its aim,in addition to studying the musical heritage of the composer, is to revive and perform his works in a unique setting that allows collaboration of scholars, artists, and Rossini lovers.

The Festival has featured international artists, such as Claudio Abbado, June Anderson, Daniela Barcellona, Rockwell Blake, Juan Diego Florez, Marilyn Horne, Chris Merritt, Samuel Ramey and others.

Established in 1980 the Festival’s mission was to make the world more aware of Rossini’s neglected operas and to present the operas in their “authentic” versions in collaboration with The Fondazione Rossini. The result has been the restoration of all of Rossini’s operas and the establishment of some of his lesser-known works into the standard repertoire.

In addition to mounting full length operas, many performed in the historic Teatro Rossini in the heart of Pesaro, the Festival runs the Accademia Rossiniana, which guides young singers to a mastery of Rossinian style and technique. Many of today’s well-known Rossinians are alumni of the Accademia.
Every year there are also a variety of recitals, concerts, and lectures in connection with the Festival, concluding with the outdoor public screening of the final concert in the center of the city.
